The success of Star Wars

Do you know who is George Lucas?

He is the man who created Star Wars.  His Star Wars earned him the loyalty that lasted for decades.

Star Wars was released on 25 May 1977 by 20th Century Fox.

But what is special about Star Wars?  Well, no one was expecting this low budget movie to be a hit.

George Lucas' creative and innovative ideas, and his works was soon recognized and became popular in the industry.

But of course, success often comes with hardships and setbacks.  He too is no exception and he faced many rejections and sacrificed many things.

George Lucas

In 1971, Universal Studios agreed to make George Lucas' films American Graffiti and Star Wars but Star Wars was rejected at an earlier conception stage. It was only because Alan Ladd, Jr. at Fox Studios liked American Graffiti that he forced through a production and distribution deal for the film. Lucas waived his up-front fee as director and negotiated to own the licensing rights—rights which the studio thought were nearly worthless because no one would have know the success of Star Wars was not just in the film industry but it also hit the street of the younger generation who love the Star Wars' games, toys and collectibles. This decision earned George Lucas hundreds of millions of dollars, as he was able to directly profit from all the licensed created for the franchise. It was also because of the success of Star Wars, Century Fox was saved from its financial difficulty.

Star Wars

George Lucas, the famous film producer, was able to create a wave with his film, Star Wars (A New Hope in 1977, The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of The Jedi in 1983).

Do you know that almost every child then wanted a piece of the Star Wars toys?

The Star War wave is so strong that even his latest three episodes of the movie flopped; it does not affect the image of Star War in the people's mind much. Star Wars is still one piece of a great movie.

Donald the Successful Businessman

Who is Donald Triump?

Let's look at him through the years...

Childhood years of Donald...

At the age of 13, Donald was going through the trouble with the authority e.g. disciplinary teacher or law-enforcer.

According to Wikipedia, Donald got into some trouble and was send to the New York Military Academy by his parent. Some other biography stated that his parent send him to the military academy so that he can learn to direct his energy and assertiveness in a positive manner as well as learned discipline and to complete his middle education.

In his career, he faced financial problems from 1989 to 1997.  According to Forbes magazine (Forbes April 3, 2000) estimated that Donald's increased debt and a drop in real-estate values caused him to lose more than two thirds of his net worth of $17 billion in 1989 to $500 million in 1990.

Toward the end of this period, he began to negotiate and restructure his debt. He has successfully negotiated down his debt but his real estate business is heading for a decline.

But in 1997, Donald Trump seems to stage a come with several projects.  Look at Trump projects during this period. Excerpt from Wikipedia: The Trump International Hotel and Tower - Honolulu seems to be a success. Construction of the Trump International Hotel and Tower - Chicago proceeds as planned although 30% of the units remain unsold. The Trump International Hotel and Tower – Toronto has had a series of delays and a height reduction. The Trump Tower - Tampa has been quite controversial because the initial sales were so successful that all deposits were returned to charge a higher price. Three years after construction of this controversial development began, construction has delayed and lawsuits have been filed. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida one Trump construction project was put on hold in favor of another (Trump International Hotel and Tower - Fort Lauderdale). Meanwhile,Trump Towers - Atlanta is being developed in a housing market which has the nation's second-highest inventory of unsold homes.

In December 2008, he failed to pay a loan due to Deutsche Bank amounting to US$40 million due to property bust and financial crisis at that time. On 13 February 2009, Donald stepped down from the board od director in Trump Entertainment Resorts. On 17 February, Trump Entertainment Resorts filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

While his good name in the business world is receiving a dent and his real estate business is heading south, his celebrity image has taken to a new level. In 2003, Gui Wei year, Donald became the executive producer and host of the NBC reality show, The Apprentice. It is a huge success.

So what do you think and say about this Donald?  Will Donald Trump, a name that is larger than life in the US real estate world, turns it tides and make a successful come back? Well, while a whole lot of people think that good fortune will bring you far, there is still 30% element of change that you can controlled. If you can feel Donald's passion and will power, you know he will max up this 30% in his hand. He summed his future in these few words, "Anyone who thinks my story is anywhere near over is sadly mistaken."

Mother Teresa the Kind Compassion Angel

Whos is she?

She was born in Skopje, capital of the Republic of Macedonia on 26 August 1910 at 2.25 p.m.

At the tender age of 12, she was already convinced that she should commit herself to a religious life. Subsequently at the age of 18, she left her home to join the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary and never see her family again.

In 1929, she arrived in Darjeeling, India, near the Himalayan Mountains to begin her novitiate toward religious life and nun-hood. She took her solemn vows as a nun on 14 May 1937, while teaching in Loreto Covent School in Calcutta.

Disturbed by the poverty that surrounded her in Calcutta, she recognized her true calling on 10 September 1946 and later leaved the convent to begin her missionary work in 1948.

Her first year of missionary work was fraught with difficulties and hardship. In her diary she had mentioned that there were times she faces doubts, loneliness and temptation to return to the comfort life of the convent.

On 7 October 1950, she received the permission to start the diocesan congregation that would later become the Missionary of Charity. Its mission was to care for, in her own words, "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, and all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." It was also at this point that a savior was born to the world and she never again looked back to her life in convent. Who was this lady who dedicated his whole life to selfless caring of those in need? She was no other than Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, better known to the world as "Mother Teresa".

Mother Teresa

In Mother Teresa's life, she had offered kindness, selfless-caring and endless sacrifices to those in need.

During the course of her work she was very much hands on in helping those who faced hardship and suffering.

In her life, Mother Teresa will always cross path with those living in despair and at the edge of hopelessness.

She was particularly surrounded by poverty, sick and dying as destine by her life. Mother Teresa was only destined to bring some warm, comfort and dignity to those who were sick and dying but were unable to change their life.

It was not in her power to do what some of her critics had said, like David Scott, who wrote that Mother Teresa limited herself to only keeping people alive rather than tackling poverty itself.

Mother Teresa has been admired and praise for what she had done.

Her work also had attracted the like-minded, those who shared her vision and ideal to join her course.

The nuns and priests were her sisters and brothers and the missionary where she worked was her home.

In her life, Mother Teresa also crossed path with those who
were powerful, high official as well as autocratic and the corrupt. These people had donated to Mother Teresa's Missionary of Charity.

Sighting cases that she had been criticized e.g. Mother Teresa accepted 10donations from the autocratic and corrupt Duvalier family in Haiti, and openly praised them.

She also accepted 1.4 million dollars from Charles Keating, involved in the fraud and corruption scheme known as the Keating Five scandal, and supported him before and after his arrest. The Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles, Paul Turley, wrote to Mother Teresa asking her to return the donated money to the people Keating had stolen from, one of whom was "a poor carpenter".

The donated money was not accounted for, and Turley did not receive a reply. Mother Teresa had no qualm in accepting charity from those who were corrupted to achieve her course.

Mother Teresa was globally recognized by the world and honoured by both governments and civilian organizations for her humanitarian services render to the people at large.

Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, Albert Schweitzer International Prize in 1975 and Order of Merit in 1983, just to name a few of the awards that granted to Mother Teresa for her work, charity and efforts of peace.

Through her work she had brought awareness on humanity and peace to the people around the world.

Mother Teresa passed away on 5 September 1997 after stepping down from the head of Missionaries of Charity on 13 March 1997.

Towards the end of her life, Mother Teresa attracted some negative attention in the Western media.

Christopher Hitchens, one of her most active critics, was commissioned to co-write and narrate the documentary Hell's Angel about her for the British Channel 4.

He also written a book named "The Missionary Position" criticizing Mother Teresa in 1995. However, the criticism would not overshadow Mother Teresa as an icon of humanity and peace as well as eclipse her work and contribution to the society.

The Three Poisons in Our Lives

Do you know that there are three poison arrows of life?

Guess most of us are not aware of this.

They are ignorance, anger and attachment.

Believe it or not these three negative feelings in us are considered to be at the root of all of our sufferings.  Out of these three, I would definitely say that the most destructive is anger.

Anger can sometimes make us do things or say things which we very much regret later.  For instance, when something happens so suddenly to anger us, it sometimes is so powerful it cause a moment of adrenaline flow of negative emotions and destructive energy in us.  Our happy nature suddenly takes a turn and we lose our cool and temper.

As we know, one simple and easiest way to counteract this sudden feelings of anger is to take a deep breath.  Breathing in and out slowly can help you channel your focus on your breathing and take away your anger.

Why is this so?

Well, while we are consciously breathing in and out, our attention is now on the breathing.  Our anger is no longer controlling us.

Good luck and try this breathing technique the next time you are angry.
