from the Tan Dynasty:
书山有路勤为径，学海无涯苦作舟
(Shū shān yǒu lù qín wèi jìng, xué hǎi wú yá kǔ zuò zhōu)
which means the sea of learning is endless,
the path to the mountain of books is diligent,
the boat to reach the shore of the learning sea is
perseverance.
