2013

2013.  Another year and a year older.  This is what our elders used to tell us in those days...

I think sometimes as modern city dwellers, we forget all about kindness.  We are just so very, very and still very busy with our life and work, we tend to forget all about being kind and nice.

When are we kind?

  • When we speak the truth
  • When we share
  • When we are polite
  • When we are friendly
  • When we forgive

Why be kind?
Because we love.

But is being kind possible in our society?  Yes.  True kindness does not come naturally.  We need to practice, praise and love.  This is why we have posters to remind us.  Kindness is not free.  It needs to be talked about, put to practice and praised.

We are lucky because of love.  Even when we are not kind or not so nice, we still get away with it.  So when we fail to show kindness as in giving up our bus seat or MRT seat,  we are still loved.  If you will try and give up your seat one day, you will find that not all will say thank you and take your seat.  Most are kind and they feel we are kids, it is alright for them to stand and we sit.

accept and except - the difference

'To accept' most commonly means 'to receive willingly'.

Except usually means 'apart from' or 'excluding'.

There is often confusion over the words accept and except. They sound similar, but their meanings are very different.

Accept

'To accept' is a verb.

It has several meanings:

1.To hold something as true.

An example:
The police officer accepts your point and has decided to let you off with a caution.

2. To receive something willingly.

An example:
I accept this award on behalf of the whole class.

3. To answer 'yes' (especially to an invitation).

 An example:

The minister would love to accept the invitation to your string ensemble, but he has a prior engagement that day.

Except

The word 'except' is most commonly seen as a preposition.

However, it can also be used a conjunction and very occasionally as a verb.

Except as a preposition means 'apart from', 'not including' or 'excluding'.

An example:
I can resist everything except temptation to chocolates.

2. Except as a conjunction means 'but' or 'if not the fact that'.

 An example:

I would go swimming, except I am scared of the hot sun.

3.Except as a verb means 'to exclude'.

 An example:

You are excepted from the ruling in this match.

Speed Reading Tips

Speed Reading Tips

What is Speed Reading?
In common terms, it simply means to read in the shortest possible time.

How do you read a book?
One is likely to read from start to finish.  Also, never going back and never skipping any sections.  This is probably one of the most inefficient and unproductive ways to read.

The beauty of text in any material is taht it is not linear.  What does this mean?  It means you can skip down to read only any main point, header or read in any manner you want to.
Simply put, it means to read in any order you want.

The simple way of reading is start to finish.  But this is not always the best or effective reading method.

Take comprehension passages for example.  For a start, I will recommend my students to read roughly start to finish.  But not each and every single word.  I want them to get a greater understanding of what the passage is.  I will ask them to completeley skim over the passage that they feel are redundant or unnecessary.

Will this help?
Yes.  When they come to the questions section, they will have an idea where the answers are.

What makes a good writer?
I beleive he or she is one who generally adds anecdotes or metaphors to improve the understanding of a concept, which you can skim over top of it if you get the main point of the reading material.

What makes a bad writer?
Well, he or she will often go short of explaining the complex details.

To summarise, re-reading helps.  It allows our brains to have time to form the concepts on what is in the text.

Another important point to note is that reading does not set pace.
Why?
This is because it depends on the context of the materials.

For instance, if the information is dense or complicated, this will require more time for information to be digested.  Hence, for some books, it is possible to read 800 words a minute but in reference book text, you may read 300 or less words per minute.

Similarly, if it is fun stuff, one can ready over 1600 or more words per minute.  Agree?

So, we can see that speed reading is not how fast or faster one can read.  But how you pace yourself for the specific reading text you have to read.

Tip No. 2
Stop Subvocalizing
It means to stop reading out loud.

When we are very young, we were told to read out loud.

After we mastered this skill, we were told to read quietly in our head.  This is where most reading education and skill levels end.

To read faster and move to a higher level, it means we need to stop sounding words in our head.  This takes time.  It depends on individual.  Here, it is not so much important for you to comprehend every word you are reading.  The main point here is to train yourself to read without hearing the words in your head.

It is not big deal if you are not able to separate the subvocalization from comprehension.
Most people cannot achieve this.  Hence, on an average, it is about 500 words per minute.  To move beyond this rate, it means you need to practise reading faster than you can actually read.

How do we do this?
It means when we read, we simply see the word and our brain will automatically construct what is written.  If we were to read superfast, it means there is no way, we could process the word and hear it in our head.

Tip No. 3
Practice Reading

That is to read as fast as you can.  It does not involve trying to comprehend what you are reading.  The main point is to see the text faster than you can read and untie the habit of sounding the words in our head and understanding them.

So, how do we do this?
See tip no. 4.

Tip No. 4
Use a pointer as in your index finger to point and read.  Your eyes do not stay fixed at one point.  Your eyes actually move around considerably faster.  Your finger should move to where you read all the time.  It should follow along the current word you are reading.

At first, you may slow down.  You need to get used to this and adjust.  Over time, you will find that it is critical and your reading skill does in fact improves.

Let your reading rate double up.  Practice sufficient.  Soon, you will find that your reading effort is worth it and a priceless tool in reading.

Tip. No 5
Eliminate distractions
Reading cannot happen if external distractions are overhelming.
Take a break if need to.

Tip No. 6
Have a motivation to read
One must connect with the text they are reading.  This specific purpose will help you stay focus and alert in your reading.

Why is this important?
If not, you will find you force yourself to read.  You do not know what is happening.  You cannot refocus.  Your mind decides that this material is boring and you will stop reading.

How to be motivated?
Find the reason why you are reading.
Is it passion?
What is your goal in reading?
To pass a test.

As long as you have a general motivation, you will want to read.  Likewise, if you do not want to read, you will come up with more reasons and this will be a struggle to move on reading.

Be creative, get motivated.  Get a motivation for reading.  You can figure it out.

EQ

What is EQ?
“EQ” stands for emotional Quotient”.

Why is it important for students to excel in their studies?

It may be even more important than IQ in one’s ability to achieve success and happiness.
We may score well on tests and excel academically, but how do we handle disappointment, anger, jealously and fear?

According to psychologists, it is agreed that IQ contributes only about 20 per cent of the factors
that determines success.

Also, IQ being equal, EQ accounts for up to 85per cent of what sets star performers
apart from the average-in work and personal life.

So, it seems like academic intelligence has little to do with emotional life.
How is this so?
Well, even the brightest among us can founder on the shoals of unbridled passions and unruly impulses.  You will be surprised at how many people with high IQs can be stunningly poor pilots of their personal lives.

All being said, we have to admit that a higher EQ significantly increases your competitive advantage and empowers you to perform at your best. It also determines your capacity to bring out the best in others.

The concept of emotional intelligent is to be applauded .Not because it is totally new but because it captures in one compelling term, the essence of what we need to know to be productive and happy in lives and in our careers.

One of psychology’s open secrets is the relative inability of grades,
IQ, or SAT scores, despite their popular mystique, to predict unerringly
who will succeed in life.

To be sure, there is a relationship between IQ and life circumstances for large groups as a whole: many people with very low IQs end up in menial jobs, and those with high IQs tend to become well-paid – but by no means always.

My concern is with a key set of these “other characteristics”, emotional intelligence:
abilities such as being able to motivate oneself and persist in the face of frustrations;
to control impulse and delay gratification;
to regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think;
to empathise and to hope.

Unlike IQ, with its nearly one-hundred-year history of research
with hundreds of thousands of people, emotional intelligence is a new concept.”

Best Exam Advice

My personal advice:

Keep yourself in good health before the exam,
get enough sleep, food, and take care of any problem
that will affect you on the day.
Heard the old saying?
Eat well, rest well.
These days vitamins and supplements are essential to have a balance life style.

If your exam is not in school,
determine where your exam is to take place.
Familiarise yourself with it.
Be sure to arrive well in time.
Why?
... so you will not panic if anything delays your journey.
MRT delays can happen any time.
Have a plan.
No!  Have 2 plans.

Prioritise what is going on in your life.
Set YOUR priorities right.
Why?
...  so it will not compete with your time for preparing for and revising for the exam.
Why again?
... so nothing will stress you out.
